Green Roof Educational Display for
Gwinnett Technical College
Smoking Pavilion Gets New Roof and Green Roof Support Structure Support Structure for Green Roof Modular Trays (Detail) Environmental Horticulture Student Consults Planting Plan
While Supervising Fellow Students on Planting Day Student Installs Plants in Custom Growing Media
The structure is located between Buildings 100 and 600 on Gwinnett Technical College's campus in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The support structure for the green roof modular trays is completed and the traditional roof is getting replaced. A detailed view of the support structure. Approximately 200 plants are used in this green roof educational display. We so graciously thank Ed Snodgrass, of Emory Knoll Farms, for donating all the plants for this project.
These plant plugs were overwintered in a green house in 3.5" plant cells to insure good root mass prior to installation.
The growing media is an ItSaulNatural custom mixture of 80% Permatil (expanded shale), 5% coarse sand, and 15% worm castings. Such a mixture is engineered to retain moisture while suppressing risks of fungal disease and minimizing wind erosion of the soil. Notice this student is not using a trowel to create plant holes! Well, I'm flummoxed. If you have any inkling what the middle guy is doing here [and why they are letting him do that where cameras are present], please complete our contact form! Green roof modular tray units are 44" square and 8" deep. They are designed with forklifts in mind. In this case, safety issues dictated the need for modular trays, so that maintenance activities could be performed on the ground rather than having students on ladders and a roof top. The forklift allows the trays to be easily lowered for maintenance tasks and then raised and returned to their support structure. The trays are installed and the plant plugs are shown in their infant state. Within one growing season, the plants should fill in completely.
