Project 11.
Residential Plan for Mature Site
in Mixed Light
This
couple wanted a landscape design primarily to fill in
new areas of light created when several trees were
removed from the yard and to complement a deck that was
recently built. The new areas are in the side and
back yards. A pathway from the driveway around the
side of the house was requested of this new space, as
well as a flower and vegetable bed. A flagstone
patio was desired to finish the outdoor area covered by
the deck. In addition, a safe means to get a lawn
mower up and down the back slope to mow the lower lawn
was required. The plan was to incorporate the existing
plant matter. Except for the flower and vegetable
bed, this couple
required a low maintenance landscaping.
THE SOLUTION
The clients' design
objectives were achieved by specifying a soft-set
pathway lined by a shade border which includes plants
specified for both erosion control and aesthetics.
Various shrub beds were added to the back to accent the
deck, back stairs and land contours. A boat ramp
style boardwalk allows the mower to be moved up and down
the back slope while providing safe passage for its
operator. The existing plant matter is incorporated and
in some instances relocation is recommended for
practical, aesthetic and/or plant wellness purposes.
Special attention to year-round visual interest is shown
and the plants specified provide an attraction to birds
and butterflies.
