Project 9.
Residential Plan for Vintage Home
in Mixed Light
This
busy couple entertains frequently and wanted a comprehensive site plan
for the front yard that would include parking for two
vehicles and a new walkway to the front entry. The
home is over a hundred years old and mature trees on the
site create mostly shade conditions. A long terra
cotta tile patio spans the house facade. Basement
rainwater leaks caused this client to remove the long
patio and replace it with a more basic front stoop.
The void created by this was to be filled in with
landscaping. Due to their lifestyles, this couple
required a low maintenance landscaping.
THE SOLUTION
The Master Plan
incorporated the requested features and designed beds to
unify the new hardscape areas to the rest of the site.
In addition to the requested parking area and entrance
walk, the site plan incorporates a retaining wall at the
street edge of the lot. This idea was generated
during a client discussion, demonstrating the power of
collaboration. New plant material recommended is
largely evergreen shrubs to soften the otherwise austere
character this site has from late fall to late spring.
Special attention to year-round interest is shown; such
is essential when relying on shrubs to carry the show.
